The biggest launch of the year
is a video game
Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on 19 November. If you plan media in the Nordics and have not been following it, this is the part worth reading before somebody asks you for a launch plan: what the game is, how big it already is, and where its audience actually sits.
Watch it yourself
Three videos, all from Rockstar's own channel, and between them the whole public record of what the game looks like. The second trailer was the biggest video launch ever measured; the third premiered on Netflix before it reached YouTube. Nothing loads until you press play.
Start here
Four things that settle most of the questions.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version at launch, which historically arrives a year or more later.
A fictional Florida: Vice City on the coast, plus swamps, keys, backcountry and small towns inland. Far larger than one city.
Two playable leads in a Bonnie-and-Clyde partnership. Lucia Caminos is the first female protagonist in the mainline series.
Owned by Take-Two Interactive. The last entry, GTA V, came out in 2013 and is still selling. This is a thirteen-year gap.

It is a whole state, not a city
GTA V was Los Angeles and the desert behind it. GTA VI is Leonida: a coastal metropolis, an island chain, wetlands, a national park and the small towns in between. Six of the places Rockstar has shown so far.

The coastal city at the centre of it, rebuilt from the 1986 original as a present-day Miami.

The island chain south of the city, reached by causeway, boat or seaplane.

The wetlands inland. Airboats, alligators and people who would rather not be found.

The national park in the north, and the off-road riding that comes with it.

Small-town Leonida: strip malls, gas stations and a motorcycle club that runs the road.

The faded resort town up the coast, all neon motel signs and out-of-season quiet.
Two leads, one story
For the first time in the numbered series you play a pair rather than a person. The series has never had a female protagonist before, and it has never built a whole story on a relationship.

Out of Leonida Penitentiary and back in Vice City, doing whatever it takes to get her mother out of the life they left Liberty City for. The first female protagonist in the mainline series.

Grew up around grifters, did a stint in the army, and is now looking for the easy way out that this series has never once granted anybody. The other half of the partnership.
The scale is not a games number
None of these are ours and none of them are estimates. They are published third-party figures, and they are why this is a media event rather than a product launch.
How it got to November
Two delays have made people cynical about the date. The pre-order figures suggest the market is not.
The first trailer
Rockstar posts a 90-second trailer. It takes 93 million views in 24 hours and becomes the most-viewed non-music video ever over that window.
GTA VI SpotTrailer two, and the first delay
The second trailer pulls over 475 million cross-platform views in a day. In the same month the release slips out of 2025 and into May 2026.
GTA VI SpotPre-orders open
Standard edition at $79.99, Ultimate at $99.99. Take-Two's CEO later calls the level of pre-orders unprecedented, with reported sales of $1.39 billion in the quarter.
VarietyThe Extended Look, on Netflix
Rockstar premieres a long gameplay showcase on Netflix rather than YouTube. It takes 31.1 million views in four days and ranks number one in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks.
VarietyNetflix had the premiere. Creators had the audience.
Rockstar put the Extended Look on Netflix, where it drew 31.1 million views in four days. At the same time, people watching creators react to it peaked at an estimated 3.97 million at once, more than Summer Game Fest managed this year. That second audience is the one a brand can actually buy, and this is how its hours split across platforms.
The 3.97 million figure is Streams Charts' estimate from public stream data, not an official Netflix or Twitch disclosure. The platform split is theirs too, measured in hours watched.

GTA is already the second most clipped game in our network
None of the numbers above are ours. This one is. We track 234 clips across 40 Nordic creators, tagged by game, and Grand Theft Auto sits second among actual games behind Counter-Strike, on the twelve-year-old edition. The spread across markets is uneven enough to change where the money should go.

Eight categories with a route in
Official placement inside the game is expensive and rationed. Everything below happens around it and needs nobody's permission. Where we have run the category the brand is named, and where we have not, the card says so.
What gets consumed during a six-hour session
Launch weekend is not a 30-second view. People settle in. Categories that already fit long sessions do not need a creative idea to belong, they just need to be there at the right hour.
Food delivery
01A launch-night stream runs straight through dinner and out the other side. Nobody is cooking. The category does not have to argue for relevance, it has to be visible at 19:00 rather than at 02:00.
Tie the overlay to the hour, not the whole broadcast.

Electronics retail
02Half of launch-week chat is people working out whether their machine will cope. That is a buying conversation happening on its own, and retail is the category that can answer it without changing the subject.
A chat command that answers the spec question beats a banner.
Energy drinks and snacks
03The most crowded category on this list, and the one where being early matters most. Everyone books launch night. The stretch nobody books is the second and third week, when the sessions are just as long and the inventory is a fraction of the price.
Skip the launch. Own the month after it.
We have not run this category in the Nordics. Treat the argument above as reasoning, not as a track record.
What the game is actually about
GTA has always been cars, money and clothes. Those categories get to be contextually relevant without touching a single piece of Rockstar's IP, which is the part most brands get wrong.
Automotive
04The series is built on car culture and the category has almost never shown up in streaming around it. Everyone chases official in-game placement, which is expensive and rationed. The stream around the game is neither.
The reveal of a car in-game is a moment. Be next to it, not in it.
No Nordic automotive campaign on our side yet. The gap is the point: nobody else has run it either.
Fashion and streetwear
05Character styling is half of what gets clipped and shared. A clothing brand does not need a licence to be in the conversation about how a character looks, it needs a creator who dresses like that anyway.
Creator-led styling content, not a logo in the corner.
Not a category we have run. Said plainly rather than dressed up.
Finance and crypto
06In-game money against real money is the oldest joke in this genre and it still works, provided the brand is in on it. The tone has to be light. A lecture about savings inside a heist stream is the fastest way to lose a chat.
Let the creator make the joke. Do not write it for them.

What launch week breaks
The Extended Look alone put Twitch into a major outage. Launch week will be worse. Two categories get to sell the solution to a problem the audience is feeling live.
Connectivity and VPN
07Downdetector logged more than 17,000 Twitch reports during a six-minute trailer. The audience felt the platform buckle in real time. That is the rarest thing in advertising: a category whose product is the answer to what the viewer is experiencing right now.
Book the outage window, not the calm after it.
Gaming hardware and audio
08Every launch stream is also a shot of somebody's desk. Viewers spend the session looking at a setup they are quietly comparing to their own. Peripherals do not need to interrupt that, they need to be in frame while it happens.
A live callout from the creator beats a scheduled break.
This is what an ad blocker cannot remove
A real Komplett overlay inside a Norwegian broadcast. There is no separate ad element on the page, so a blocker has nothing to strip. Across a six-hour launch stream that difference compounds: a pre-roll reaches the minority without a blocker, once.
See the campaignThree things we would talk a client out of
Do not build anything that needs a licence
Official in-game placement is slow, expensive and mostly unavailable. Everything on this page works around the game instead, which is why it can be booked in weeks rather than quarters.
Do not put the global numbers in a Nordic media plan
31.1 million and 3.97 million are worldwide entertainment figures. Writing them into a Nordic plan is how a campaign ends up measured against a number it was never going to reach.
Do not book launch week and call it a strategy
GTA V came out in 2013 and is still one of the most watched games on Twitch. Launch week is the loudest moment, not the whole opportunity.
